چکیده

The monkey with removal of the inferotemporal cortex (IT monkey) showed a marked impairment of discrimination between a pair of visual pattern stimuli, which consisted of different patterns on the identical background [corrected] plaques. The present study showed that an IT monkey, unlike an unoperated normal monkey, performed discrimination with utilizing a partial cue within the whole configuration of pattern stimuli. In contrast to a general concept, the present finding appears to raise a question as to whether the IT monkey can perceive or identify visual pattern.

Neuronal responses to object images in the macaque inferotemporal cortex at different stimulus discrimination levels.

We can discriminate visual objects at multiple levels, from coarse categorization to individual identification. It is not known how the brain adapts to the varying levels of discrimination required in different behavioral contexts. In the present study, we investigated whether the stimulus selectivity of neuronal responses in the monkey inferotemporal cortex, which is the final unimodal stage i...

Texture discriminability in monkey inferotemporal cortex predicts human texture perception

Shape and texture are both important properties of visual objects, but texture is relatively less understood. Here, we characterized neuronal responses to discrete textures in monkey inferotemporal (IT) cortex and asked whether they can explain classic findings in human texture perception. We focused on three classic findings on texture discrimination: 1) it can be easy or hard depending on the...

Elevation of visual pattern discrimination limen in monkeys with total removal of inferotemporal cortex.

Attempts were made to test the validity of the general view that inferotemporal lesions in monkeys do not result in a visual acuity disorder. It was found in the first experiment that monkeys with total removal of the inferotemporal visual area (TIT monkeys) showed a significant elevation of the discrimination limen for visual patterns of reduced sizes even when compared to monkeys with removal...

Development of monotonic neuronal tuning in the monkey inferotemporal cortex through long-term learning of fine shape discrimination

Visual expertise in discriminating fine differences among a group of similar objects can be obtained through extensive long-term training. Here we investigated the neural bases of this superior capability. The inferotemporal cortex, located at the final stage along the ventral visual pathway, was a candidate site in monkeys because cells there respond to various complex features of objects. To ...

Inferotemporal versus combined pulvinar-prestriate lesions in the rhesus monkey: effects on color, object and pattern discrimination.

Monkeys with inferotemporal lesions were compared to monkeys with combined lesions of the pulvinar and prestriate cortex on discrimination problems and on tests of sensory function. Inferotemporal lesions severely impaired discrimination of colors, objects, and patterns, but did not produce any sensory loss. By contrast, combined pulvinar-prestriate lesions impaired only discrimination of patte...
